During and after the mapping action, there is a process whereby the City officially acquires the street through various filings and procedures by the City and parties of interest within the mapping project area. However, just because an alteration map was adopted does not mean the street was actually built or altered. ![]() Since the 1811 Commissioners’ Map there have been over 3000 alteration maps legally adopted by the City of New York for the Borough of Manhattan, affecting various parts of the borough, but all based on the original map. ![]() Each block was mapped with the dimension of 200 feet by 800 feet. The avenues were mapped at a width of 100 feet and the streets were mapped at a width of 60 feet, except for main cross streets (14th, 23rd, 34th 42nd, 57th, 72nd, 79th, 86th, 96th, 106th, 116th, 125th, 135th, 145th and 155th Streets) which where mapped at a width of 100 feet. The 1811 Commissioners plan mapped the grid system north of North Street (now known as East Houston Street). The City Map for the Borough of Manhattan represents the Approved 1811 Commissioners’ Plan plus subsequent officially adopted alterations maps.
